How to Use Material Libraries in Cinema 4D’s Asset Browser

Quick answer

To use a material library in Cinema 4D, connect its supplied Asset Browser database, then load the material you need into your scene. If you prefer working from a .c4d library file, open that file and copy selected materials into your project. Keep the accompanying textures available whichever route you choose.

Motion Squared V2 packs provide a .c4d material library with attached 4K texture maps, plus an optional Asset Browser database. Choose the pack version that matches your renderer: Redshift, Octane, Standard, Corona, V-Ray or Arnold. The Asset Browser organises and loads materials. Changing databases does not convert them to another renderer.

Asset Browser or .c4d: which should you use?

Use the Asset Browser when you want to browse your library alongside other assets inside Cinema 4D. Use the .c4d file when you want to inspect the supplied materials together or bring a small selection into a project.

The Material Manager holds the materials in your current scene. Cinema 4D can load a material from the Asset Browser into that manager by double-clicking it. You can then assign it to an object. Maxon’s Material Manager guide

Before you begin, extract the pack download and read its included instructions. Keep the original download as a backup, and put your working library somewhere you intend to keep it. If you move the files during a project, you may need to update their paths.

Connect the supplied Asset Browser database

The command names here follow Maxon’s Cinema 4D 2026 documentation. If your release looks different, use its matching help pages and the instructions supplied with the pack.

  1. Open Cinema 4D’s Asset Browser and show its database view.
  2. For an extracted asset database, choose Database → Connect Database and select the database directory.
  3. If the supplied file is specifically a zipped asset database, use Connect ZIP Database instead. A normal product-download ZIP is not necessarily a database.
  4. Select the connected library and find the material you want to use.

These connection commands expect an actual Cinema 4D asset database. Pointing them at a folder containing only .c4d files or texture images will not turn that folder into one. Maxon’s Asset Browser database commands

Load one material first and make a small test scene. Confirm that you have selected the intended renderer and that its required software is available before bringing a larger selection into a working project.

Use the .c4d library without connecting a database

Open the supplied .c4d library and your destination project. In the library’s Material Manager, select the materials you need and choose Copy. Switch to your project’s Material Manager and choose Paste. This copies the selected materials without requiring you to bring in every object from the library scene. Cinema 4D also offers Load Materials in the Material Manager’s Create menu. That command can read materials from another scene file directly. It is useful when you want the file’s materials without first opening the library as a separate scene. Maxon’s Load Materials documentation

Keep the source textures in place while you work. Copying a material into another scene does not mean you can delete the downloaded texture files.

Fix missing textures before rendering

If Cinema 4D reports missing textures, open the Project Asset Inspector and check the missing entries. For moved bitmap files, choose Edit → Select Missing Assets, then Assets → Relink Assets and point Cinema 4D at the folder containing those textures.

A missing node asset can be a different problem: its database may be disconnected or disabled. In that case, reconnect or enable the relevant database rather than relinking an unrelated image folder. Once the project is working, Save Project with Assets can help collect its dependencies. Maxon’s Project Asset Inspector guide

Reopen the saved project and run a small render before committing to a longer job. That gives you a useful check of both material loading and file paths.

Pick a library for your next project

Browse the Cinema 4D material packs for your renderer. The Metal pack suits product and hard-surface work; Wood covers furniture and interior details.

If a Motion Squared pack will not load, email don@motionsquared.net with the pack name, renderer, Cinema 4D version and exact error message. Include a screenshot of the missing-file or database warning if there is one.
